Biography

Shun Ito was born in 1961 and studied at Tama Art University in Tokyo, where he developed a keen interest in
physical expression. Searching for new possibilities in the performing arts, Ito joined the company KARAS in
1987 and studied his particular style of dance under Saburo Teshigawara. While performing in many
international dance festivals as a dancer, he participated in the visual arts ( installations, films/videos ) as a
technical assistant to Teshigawara, as well as a production manager of the company. He left KARAS in 2001
and began to make his own kinetic sculptures. Consciousness of gravity which he gained through his dance
experience became the main theme of his creations. Many of the works incorporate light as an important
element, and various accelerations create complex visual experiences through light. Since the impression of
these moving lights is rather cinematic than usual kinetic sculpture, he called his pieces "perforation
sculpture" when he held his solo exhibition at a Tokyo movie theatre in 2011. The word "perforation" is
associated with both the image of a mechanical gear and film ( perforations are the holes in film for moving
it ). In the piece "Cosmic Bird" created in 2012, he converted the movement of the machine into sound instead
of light as his new endeavour to comprehend the consciousness of gravity from a different angle. Since then
he named the group of his sculptures Cosmic Birds. In 2014, he was invited to exhibit at "Art Robotique" at
Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris for 9 month. Cosmic Birds had continued to travel, exhibiting at
“Frequency” the digital arts festival in Lincoln in 2015 and culminating in Ito’s largest exhibition at the
International Dance Festival Birmingham 2016. The exhibition includes the commissioned work "Cells", a giant
mobile made up of 200 rotating steel rings suspended in the hall of the city’s 1930s Grade II listed Municipal
Bank. The success of this exhibition had been a major step for the artist leading to exciting discussions for
more activity in Europe. Subsequently, Cosmic Birds was invited to the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company. In
2019, he collaborated with Sydney-based composer Nick Wells to plan "Kinetic WanderLandscape" an attempt
to create an unprecedented dynamic landscape, but the project was inevitably interrupted due to COVID_19.
During this period, he expanded the sound installation in Japan "Dawn Chorus" which explored frequencies
and overtones. Simultaneously, he began producing a large-scale project machine based on the theme of
"Black Eyed Sun" which he had become more aware of during the pandemic. In 2023, the work was completed over two years and exhibited in Ashikaga under the name "ORBIT3_Black Eyed Sun".

伊藤俊　(1961~ )
多摩美術大学グラフィックデザイン科在籍時より舞台芸術、身体表現に興味を持ちはじめる。卒業後新たなパフォーミングアートの可能性を探る中、ダンスカンパニーKARASのメンバーとなり勅使川原三郎に師事する。ダンサーとして国際フェスティバルに参加する一方、勅使川原のテクニカルアシスタント、またカラスのプロダクションマネージャーとしてビジュアルアートの活動（インスタレーション、フィルム、ビデオ）に参加する。2001年KARASより独立、自身の動く作品を発表し始める。ダンスという身体表現の中で強く意識するようになった重力をクリエイションのメインテーマとし、作品の多くは光を重要な要素として取り入れ、様々な加速度が光によって複雑な視覚を生み出す。 その動く光のイメージは従来のキネティックアートに比べるとはるかに映像的であり、2011年に東京の映画館で個展をした際に作品の持つメカニカルなギアのイメージと映像、この二つのイメージを喚起させるものとして自身の作品をパーフォレイション（フィルムの送り穴）スカルプチャーと呼 ぶ、 2012年発表の「コズミックバード」において初めてマシーンの動きを音に変換し、重力に対する新たなアプローチを試みる。以降一連の作品をコズミックバーズ と呼ぶ。2014年パリシテ科学産業博物館にて開催された「アートロボティック」展に招待されコズミックバーズ は９ヶ月という長期に渡って動き続ける。コズミックバーズ は旅を続け、2015年のリンカーンでのデジタルアートフェスティバル「Frequency」での展示の後、バーミンガム国際ダンスフェスティバルで自身の最大の展覧会として結実する。この展覧会では、委託作品である「Cells」を現地制作、1930年代の歴史遺産市営バンクに200の鉄のリングから構成された巨大なモービルを設置、好評を博す。この展覧会の成功は、アーティストにとって重要な一歩であり、ヨーロッパでのさらなる活動を促す。Cosmic Birdsは2016年にはドレスデン・フランクフルト・ダンスカンパニーに招待される。2019年シドニーをベースにする作曲家ニック ウエルス氏と共同で今までに無い動力学的風景を創り出す試み “ Kinetic WanderLandscape”を企画するもパンデミックの影響でプロジェクトは中断を余儀なくされる。その間、周波数と倍音を探求したサウンドインスタレーション”Dawn Chorus”を国内で展開する。と同時にパンデミック下に自身の中で大きく意識する様になった”Black Eyed Sun” を主題に大型のプロジェクトマシーンの制作を開始する。2023年、２年かけて作品は完成し”ORBIT3_Black Eyed Sun” と名付けて足利で展示。
